Located in Manhattan, underneath the Olive Tree Café, this club has served as the launching pad for many top entertainers. Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Ray Romano and Wanda Sykes are just some of the many performers that have benefited from this comedic outlet. This club hosts an average of 17 stand-up comedy acts per week, ensuring a performance for every kind of humor. The comedian Sammy Shore opened Comedy Store on LA’s Sunset Strip in 1972. During the same year, Johnny Carson transported the Tonight Show to the West Coast, which generated much more interest in the comedy clubs in the Los Angeles area. Shore’s wife, Mitzi, was responsible for organizing the first “all stand-up” comedy show in the world which lead to the club’s national fame. When the couple was divorced in 1974, Mitzi won full ownership of the comedy club. She was so successful that she opened another club in Westwood to house the growing number of budding improv comedians. Some of the top stars that have performed at these comedy clubs include Jay Leno, Dave Letterman, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Michael Keaton and dozens of others. Many comedians owe their success to the contributions of Mitzi. Today, the Comedy Club continues to be one of the most notable comedy clubs in the world, providing stand-up comedy every night of the week.
