The world of comedy has recently added something new: women! In the past 10 years, female comedians have been on the rise in the stand-up comedy world. Yet, even though the past 10 years seem to be when the popularity level rose for female comedians, these icons have been in the spotlight for decades.
Lucille Ball is one of the first female comedians of this era. Ball started off in the acting business, where she failed profusely as an actress. It was not until she starred in the hit television show “I Love Lucy” that turned her into a star. Ball was known as one of the only female comedians of her time period, and had the highest ratings at the time her show was aired. Even years after her death, Ball is still featured on television for her notorious jokes and hilarious sense of humor. She quickly started forming the stepping-stones for female comedians to come.
Another one of the best female comedians is Lily Tomlin. Her debut came shortly after Ball's end of glory, where Tomlin started by doing stand-up comedy at local Detroit nightclubs. Tomlin became a part of a popular comedy called “Laugh-In,” where her character, Ernestine, made her unique and well known all over the comedy industry. Lily Tomlin has won Emmy, Tony and Grammy awards for her hilarious performances as a female comedian.
Whoopi Goldberg was next in line for a flourishing female comedian in her time period. She became an icon for aspiring actresses and comedians, winning Golden Globe, Academy, Emmy, Tony and Grammy awards. Throughout her career, Goldberg balanced acting and stand-up comedy together, become successful in both aspects. To this very day, Whoopi Goldberg continues to do stand-up and bring comedy into the lives of everyone.
In today's times, most people associate female comedians with the icon of this era: Ellen DeGeneres. She started with gigs and small nightclubs until she landed a spot at Clyde's Comedy Club. Throughout the years, DeGeneres moved back and forth from acting to stand-up comedy, being unique with her quirky sense of humor. Currently, DeGeneres has her own talk show called “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” which airs every day during daytime hours. DeGeneres continues to be a popular image in the world, and has previously been chosen to host events such as the Academy Awards.
Female comedians continue to rise within the comedy world. Thanks to Lucille Ball who opened the doors, famous female comedians have made various statements in society and continue to make a large impact on the general population.
